Denby Eats: Huntley Green

Set at the bottom of Derbyshire's Cromford Hill on the picturesque Market Place, Huntley Green appears to be the hub of the village. Opened in 2014, this coffee shop cross delicatessen is a charming location for a leisurely drink or a hearty meal. Owned and managed by brother and sister team, Kelly and Greg, and assisted by Poppy, Huntley Green brings high-quality food and refined dining to the Peak District.

The name of the coffee shop takes inspiration from the original Market Place that was recognised as the Huntley Green many years ago. The building itself is over 300 years old and was formerly a chemist. The site has been wonderfully reinstated and contains a number of original, characteristic pieces of furniture: the coffee machine is displayed on a shelving unit retained from the chemist, and the original chemist sign is presented as an historic art piece in the centre of the space.

The interiors boast an eclectic mix of old and new, including a number of antique chairs from the owner’s grandmother. The chairs have been reupholstered with striped prints and now sit beautifully in the coffee shop, alongside other block white chairs and wooden tables. Strategically placed crates frame the deli area, and offer visitors an arrangement of local produce including homemade chilli jam, honey from Cromford Bees, chocolates by Steeple Grange Chocolate Fairies, Amber Valley wines and beers from Thornbridge and Shottle Farm Breweries.

The menu is varied and caters for every special diet with the incorporation of the (most delicious!) gluten- free pancakes, vegetarian breakfasts as well as vegan and dairy- free options. Everyday dishes include, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, poached eggs and mushrooms on thick grain toast, homemade burgers, quiches, soup, gourmet sandwiches and salads. The food has a certain artisan flair that is conveyed both aesthetically and within every flavour present; this is no doubt credited to head chef, Greg. A highly skilled chef having worked in five star establishments in London, Greg ensures that every dish is prepared to the highest standard and incorporates the finest ingredients. Each dish is freshly prepared on a daily basis and both Kelly and Greg are zealous in the development and execution of each and every dish.

In addition, drinks are served in Denby Pottery mugs, specifically mugs from our Heritage collections in muted shades of our Veranda cream, Orchard mint and Fountain blue. Mugs are also hung decoratively in the window display and create a calming and rustic feel. The curvilinear shape of the mugs complements the interior style of the eatery and make a subtle link to the importance of local suppliers and produce.
